Is There Life On Other Worlds?
Science fiction has popularized the idea that there may be life on other planets. In this genre, people travel light years in a blink of eye from one planet system to another and almost every where they go they find some form of alien life. Scientists are also no strangers to the idea of extra-terrestrial life. Hard working scientists pour billions of dollars and countless man hours in the quest of finding life on other worlds. They have sent probes to Mars with the purpose of looking for life. They have large radio telescopes aimed toward the heavens hoping to pick up a signal sent from an alien civilization. With the Hubble telescope and new earth bound telescopes; scientists are searching for planets in other solar systems that would be capable of sustaining life. Sadly, in all of this effort and money, there has yet to be found one bit of evidence of life anywhere but on earth. Even the planets they have discovered are too large or the wrong distance their sun to sustain life. Will this effort pay off some day or will it be a huge waste of human effort?
I am surprised how many Christians are not sure whether there is life on other planets. This inability to answer this question is usually the result of a lack of biblical study or the allurement of the idea of alien worlds and alien races. At this point let me say the Bible does give a definitive answer to this question. In order to properly cover this answer let us consider four facts.
1) Fact #1: the Bible never makes any reference to aliens. The Bible does not make any direct statement to alien life nor does it allude or hit of its existence. This fact flies directly into the face of some popular TV “experts” who like to point out places where the Bible mentions encounters with UFOs. Let me give you a few examples of what I am talking about.
a. In Exodus 13 and 14 we are introduced to the pillar of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night that gave direction to the people of Israel. Since these defy the natural laws of physics and bear the shape of many UFOs (cigar shape), it has been concluded that these were Alien space crafts guiding the Israelites out of Egypt. The problem with this view is that God makes it very clear that this cloud and fire were not an extra-terrestrial space craft but rather the Shekinah Glory or presence of God. These people did not speculate what these pillars represented but clearly identified them as being the representation of the glory and presence of God.
Ex 13:21-22, “And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night.”
Ex 14:24, “Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians.”
Ex 16:10, “Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.”
b. Genesis 6:1-8 speaks of the “sons of God” marrying the daughters of men and they had extraordinary children. Giants in the world of that time. Those who seek to find UFOs in the Bible argue that these “sons of God” must have been aliens and this would explain the differences in their offspring. However, the term “sons of God” is used in only one other place in the OT and that in the book of Job. In Job 1:6 and 2:1 it is clear that the “Sons of God” were angels and more specifically the fallen angels who must report regularly to the Lord. In Job 38:7 states these “sons of God” were present at the time of the creation of the world and universe and sang forth in praises to God for His marvelous work. Likewise, in 2 Peter 2:4-5 these “sons of God” are identified as fallen angels who sinned at the time of Noah. Jude adds that these angels were imprisoned because they were guilty of the same type of sexual immorality that was common in the doomed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Jude 6-7).
It is therefore clear from these two examples that UFO theorists hunt for aliens in the Bible comes up short. The extraordinary events of the Bible were either the work of angels or the direct hand of God.
2) Fact #2: angels can not be identified as aliens. Some would like to make angels out to be aliens however two problems make this impossible. First of all, angels do not have their origins from any other physical world in the universe neither they do they dwell on any other planet. The only planet they are interested in is earth. Secondly, they are spiritual beings thus they do not have a physical dimension to their beings. Angels can at times take on a physical body for a short period of time however this is never a permanent condition and is abandoned when they have accomplished their assigned task. For example the angels who accompanied the Lord when He visited Abraham and who later removed Lot and his family (Gen. 18:1-22; 19:1-22) had physical bodies only until their task was completed. They were never created to be a permanent part of the physical aspect of God’s Kingdom.
3) Fact #3: the driving force to find extra-terrestrial life is the theory of evolution. Let me share a couple of examples of how this plays out.
a. The theory of evolution teaches that life began on its own through chance and has evolved upward into more and more sophisticated creatures ultimately producing modern man. Now the premise of this theory is that life can spring forth anywhere in the universe where ever the conditions are right. The creation of life is the natural process of the work of evolution. Therefore, if no life can be found existing anywhere else in all of the universe, than one must draw the conclusion that life is not the natural process of evolution. This leaves man with only one other explanation for the origin of life. Life is the product of a sovereign omnipotent righteous God (Gen. 1; John 1:4). To the mind of fallen man this second alternative is unacceptable. The reason it is unacceptable is because it makes man morally answerable to a righteous God who will punish man for his sins. Man is so opposed to the idea of a Creator God that he is willing to waste billions of dollars and countless man hours trying to prove it wrong. So far man in his attempt to prove evolution through extra-terrestrial life is batting a huge zero. How much better to use that money and man power to assist the poor and pay off the national debt. ET does not exist.
b. Based on the theory of evolution, man is ever evolving upwards. Mankind is getting better, stronger, and intellectually wiser. Often it is cited that the recent technological advances of man are proof of this climb ever upward. This premise of evolution has led man to some wrong conclusions. For example, in considering the great difficulty of building the pyramids and the level of intelligence of man at that time, he draws the conclusion that man had to have had outside help. This outside help had to have been from some one with greater intelligence and technology thus he turns to alien visitors.
By clinging to the theory of evolution, man has missed the truth about the construction of the pyramids. Because we have advanced in our technology we think we are more intelligent than previous generations. We may have more knowledge but we do not have greater intelligence. In fact we have evolved downward in our intellectual capacity and thus are less intelligent than the generation who designed and built the pyramids. The fact they could build the pyramids and many other marvelous structures without modern equipment shows just how much smarter they were then we are. In essence, for the evolutionist, to defend his theory of evolution he must appeal to aliens to explain the great accomplishments of early man.
4) Fact #4: The Bible declares that God created life on only on earth. No life was created anywhere else in the physical universe. This fact can be supported by several passages.
a. In Gen. 1:1-13, the whole of the creative work of God is centered around the planet earth. God at the end of the third day had separated the waters and placed living vegetation upon the earth. What is particularly important to note here is that three days into creation God has yet to create the universe. God has yet created any other galaxies, solar systems, or planets, just earth. This would seem to indicate that God’s “center” or focus of the universe is on earth and earth alone.
b. In Gen. 1:14-19, God creates the physical universe. The purpose of his creating this universe is to serve those living on the earth. He created the whole of the universe for the benefit of those who occupied earth. Such would not be the case if God had created life in other worlds.
i. He created the stars and planets to divide day from night and to measure seasons, days, and years (14, 18). In other words their creation was designed to help those who inhabited earth keep time.
ii. He created the stars to give light to the earth (15-18) the greater light for the day and the lesser light for the night. The sun, moon, and stars were created for the purpose of giving light to the earth and ultimately to man.
iii. He created the whole of universe to aid man in understanding God
Rom 1:19-20, “because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,
iv. In Gen. 3 Adam and Eve sinned and because of this sin, the whole of the physical universe fell under the curse of Adam’s sin (Rom. 8:19-23). If God had created other races of beings on other planets, it would have been unjust of God to put the curse of sin upon them and their worlds because of the sin of someone on planet earth. The fact that the physical universe was created for the benefit of man brings understanding as to why it suffered the curse of sin along with one it was created to serve. It also explains why through the redemption of man it too will be freed from sins curse.
It is therefore clear that the whole of the universe was not created for many races of beings each with their own world but for only one race of being, man. Since that was its purpose, then we must draw the conclusion that God created life on only one world in all of the universe. That world is the earth that we live on. There are no aliens nor will life ever be found on any planet, asteroid, comet, moon, or any other place in the whole of the universe. Life requires a Creator for it to begin and since the Creator records that He created all things for the benefit of life on earth and does not record creating life anywhere else, we must conclude that that earth is the only place in the physical universe life is found.
Then what are UFOs? This is a question pondered by many. What about alien abductions and experiments that many people have claimed they have experienced? We can say with absolute assurance, UFOs are not alien space crafts. What is it that people are witnessing? It has been shown that some of these are fakes to get man’s attention. Others are easily explained as natural phenomenon. Some may be advanced military crafts being tested. However, it is possible that many may be the work of Satan and his fallen angels. Let us remember, that the rise in the interest and search for aliens may not be an accident. Satan knows the day is coming when the church will be suddenly removed from the face of the earth. An explanation must be given as to what has happened. May be Satan’s explanation will be aliens and therefore he is presently preparing the minds of man to accept this explanation as plausible.
